a) What is fixed wire testing?

Sometimes known as a periodic inspection, fixed Wiring testing has become increasingly popular due to the growing amount of technology and equipment being used in today's enviroment. Fixed wire testing is the testing of the wiring within the fabric of a building and having a Fixed wiring test completed in your workplace/Home is highly recommended due to the Health and Safety of employees and users of the installation.

A Fixed wire test involves the testing and inspection of each individual circuit in an electrical installation/system. The reason for this is to determine the safety of the installation and to reduce the chances of electrical shock to persons or livestock.

b) Is it necessary?

Yes.  It is a mandatory requirement of the “Electricity At Work Regulations 1989”. A series of tests is carried out to each individual circuit, submain and the equipment used in the installation. The visual and Infra Red inspection is important to establish many things such as exposed dangerous wires and overheating of equipment/ circuits.

c) What happens if we fail to have it tested?

Failure to carry out such testing is likely to invalidate your insurance cover in the event of a claim.  Also, you may have a personal duty of care to the employees and by endangering their lives you could be held responsible and prosecuted, under the HSE laws.  The HSE inspectorate carries out routine inspections.

d) How often should it be done?

In a normal office environment no less that once every five years, with a yearly visual or Infra Red inspection.

e) Who carries out the work?

Fixed wire test engineers are full qualified to 16th Edition standards and hold a BS2391 certificate.  At anytime there will be at least one fully qualified engineer to BS2391 on site.
